Weekends are great! Friday night some of us went downtown to eat dinner and see the sights. Then on Saturday I went kayaking on the Green River with Andrew (a 4th year). It was my first time EVER and it was great!!! I flipped over a couple of times, and that was a little scary- but I survived (and swallowed quite a bit of water in the process)! :) Now I am really sore and a little bruised up - but it was definitely worth the adventure!
I just got back from hanging out after church at Jason's Deli with a bunch of people. It has been fun getting to know people from church! Now, its about time to start another week...

Today was the last day of my 4 week rotation through the consult/liason branch of the psychiatry department. I actually enjoyed it... and saw a lot of interesting patients. Although, it was often frustrating and somewhat depressing since a lot of the patients were in the hospital because they drink too much alcohol, do too many drugs, or tried to kill themselves... Anyway, it is now the weekend, and I am happy for that, too! Next week, I will be working with another doctor in the Adult Psychiatry department of the psychiatry hospital.

I spent another day listening to people who have messed up their lives in more ways than I ever thought possible. And listening to people whose lives have been messed up by events that I cannot ever imagine happening to me. Then we try to make it better somehow...thats pretty much my job right now...

Well, things have been pretty busy the last few days. I have spent most of my time talking to patients during the day and reading about psychiatry/relaxing a little bit in the evenings. I am pretty much enjoying it, although dealting daily with chronic alcoholics, drug addicts, and suicide attempts can be a little depressing at times. But, helping some patients has been a good experience. Anyway, I am off to bed! cya l8r!

I wish they all had mood rings

In psychiatry it is a very real possibility that the attending physician will look at you and ask "how would you describe the patient's mood?" Well, the first couple of times he asked me this question, for some reason I had quite the difficulty finding words (other than "happy" or "sad") to describe this nebulous thing we call "mood." BUT, I have found a solution to my mental inadequacy- a web site dedicated to describing moods! So, from now on you may notice a new icon on my site that will be describing my alleged "mood." AND, soon I will know every mood in the book!

Ahh, psychiatry

Today was an easy day. After all, I am on psychiatry- we finished at 2! Tomorrow I will actually be in the hospital doing consults/liason. I am a little nervous about it, but it will nice to finally be in the hospital learning stuff. I guess I'll do some reading and refresh myself on how to do a mental status exam! Then, its off to bed so I can get to the hospital by 9!
